Background

Healthcare company Amersham plc had grown by acquisition and had a diverse management population spread across four main locations in Europe and the US.  To help it work more effectively as one global business, the company was harmonising its HR policies across borders.

Challenge

One of the first priorities was to devise and communicate a common framework for the way Amersham rewarded its senior managers.  However, underlying practices in the company’s different locations and business lines sometimes varied significantly.

What I Did

I formed part of an HR working group that examined the differences in business and regional practices, and identified where consistency was possible and desirable.  I then wrote a simple guide that set out the company’s global principles and processes.  A copy was sent to every manager in Amersham.  A survey showed that the guide was appreciated for its clarity and simplicity.

In a similar vein…

I created guides to international mobility for supranational organisation the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and cross-border exchange Euronext.
